God has cared for
these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a
thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from
John Muir(1838 - 1914)
Our foray into agro-forestry started
at Ankura when Dr.Sheshadri advised
us that it's a good option to have excess trees planted very
close by and to steadily trim them as and when required to make
the most of a small plot. We were able to grow more than 600
trees at our acre plot Ankura among which are 70+ species. Well... this has worked pretty well
for us. In a short span of 8 years we were able to get about ~60
silver oak poles that were used during the construction of our
house & cow shed at Vanashree.
When we started planting trees
at Vanashree we were armed with our experience at Ankura and the two books 'The book of Indian trees'
and 'Some beautiful Indian trees '
to guide us.
Over the years our knowledge of trees and our appreciation
for trees has grown by leaps and bounds. Planting a tree sapling
is a a very enjoyable experience but more so when you watch the
tree grow! Flowers, fruits and all the life forms a tree
be put in words.
